The purpose of the operation is to prevent undue or unnecessary degradation of the public lands associated with excess wild horses, and to restore a thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on public lands, consistent with the provisions of Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. The BLM strives to be a good neighbor in the communities we serve, ensuring public safety is not at risk due to the overpopulation of wild horses and providing opportunities for economic growth with space for traditional uses.
Details of Gather:
The BLM plans to gather 1,500 wild horses and remove approximately 1,000 excess horses. The BLM will release approximately 250 mares that will have been treated with the fertility control vaccine PZP-22 to slow the population growth rate of the animals remaining on public lands. PZP-22 is a temporary fertility-control vaccine that can prevent pregnancy in wild horses for 1-2 years. In addition, approximately 250 gathered stallions will be selected and returned back to the range.
Public Observation:
Members of the public are welcome to view the daily gather operations, provided that doing so does not jeopardize the safety of the animals, staff and observers, or disrupt gather operations. The BLM will escort the public to gather observation sites located on public lands. The BLM anticipates that viewing opportunities will begin on January 23, 2018, weather and logistics permitting. Those wanting to view gather operations must notify Public Affairs Specialist, Greg Deimel at (775) 388-7078 prior to the desired viewing date to be added to the attendee list and receive specific instructions on meeting locations and times
Participants must provide their own transportation, water and food. The BLM recommends footwear and clothing suitable for harsh field conditions and a four-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle. Public restrooms will not be available onsite.
Background:
The Triple B Complex is located in both the BLM Ely and Elko Districts and consists of the Triple B HMA (Ely), Maverick Medicine HMA (Elko), Antelope Valley HMA west of Hwy 93 (Elko), and Cherry Springs Wild Horse Territory (Elko). The gather may also take place in areas outside of those HMAs where wild horses have moved in search of food and water and are creating a public safety hazard by traveling regularly across Jiggs Road.
The current population estimate for the Triple B Complex is approximately 3,842 wild horses. The cumulative Appropriate Management Level for all the Herd Management Areas within the targeted gather area is 472 – 884 wild horses. AML is the level at which wild horse populations are consistent with the land’s capacity to support them and other mandated uses of those lands, including protecting ecological processes and habitat for wildlife and livestock.

There are no “excess” wild horses and burros on their legally designated land.
This wild horse looking across the vista appears to be wondering the same thing that continually crossed our minds during this three day journey … “Where have all the wild ones gone”?
Although a very few wild horses and burros were seen, the best way to describe our three days on the Herd Management Areas (HMAs) is “mile after mile and hour after hour seeing no wild horses or burros”.
During this three day ground survey there were two experienced wildlife observers with binoculars searching for wild horses and burros and other wildlife in the Twin Peaks, New Ravendale, Buckhorn and Coppersmith Wild Horse and Burro Herd Management Areas (HMAs). We traveled approximately 160 miles over 3 days and
17 hours in the herd management areas. We drove slowly with many stops along with some limited off-road hiking and we constantly looked for signs of wild horses and wild burros. A total of 23 wild horses and 18 wild burros were observed. All observed horses and burros and range conditions appeared to be in excellent health – the only good news.
Near Rye Patch Road, we saw two family groups traveling together. One family is Magic, our treasured son of the great Twin Peaks stallion BraveHeart who was captured in 2010 and Magic’s faithful mare Hope. The other family consists of a bay stallion, charcoal colored mare, their yearling and their new foal … and a burro! Although having been spotted earlier this year – safe and sound – these two families had been missing after the Rush fire raced through their home area last summer. It was an inspirational moment to see them safe after having escaped the massive 2010 capture and the uncontrolled Rush wild fire – the white/appy stallion again lived up to his name, “Magic”.
This public land is set aside by Congress principally for wild horses and burros, but there are very few that remain since the roundup of 2010. It is incredible and unbelievable when the BLM says there are 1,684 out here again…
Magic and Hope
Per the 1971 Congressional Act, the land is to be devoted PRINCIPALLY but not exclusively to the wild horses and wild burros welfare in keeping with the multiple-use management concept of public lands. Definition of “principally”: First, highest, foremost in importance, rank, worth or degree, chief, mainly, largely, chiefly, especially, particularly, mostly, primarily, above all, predominantly, in the main, for the most part, first and foremost.
There are no “excess” wild horses and burros on their legally designated land. The American people are being deceived by our government agencies that are mandated by Congressional Law to protect these animals. The wild horses and burros ALREADY have a place to live and it is not in governmental corrals. These animals and this land do NOT belong to the government … the wild horses and burros and the lands belong to you and me.

Referring to today’s upcoming capture list – it says 100 wild horses will be bait/water trapped on the Murderer’s Creek HMA in Oregon starting tomorrow! This HMA is jointly “managed” by BLM and USFS, who said in their recent EA: “The AML for wild horses within the HMA is 50-140 wild horses with an objective of managing for a herd size of 100 animals.”
Now, take a look at the map that shows the census count. The census count as of the spring of 2012 was 171 (foals not counted) and I have the payment invoices from the bait trap contractor to BLM that says last fall they trapped 100 wild horses and then last winter they trapped 100 more … and now they have authorized another 100 wild horses be captured.
Assume that the 200 (last fall and last winter) would include the original 171 wild horses plus the foals and likely some on private property/outside HMA but there is no way there will be another 100 taken this summer and still leave 100 which was the stated plan in the EA. ZERO or more accurately stated … minus zero will be the result and thus Murderer’s Creek HMA will be the next HA land since there will be no horses to manage … thus no HMA.
And this will be the continuous plan (already going strong) for all of our WH&B … except for a few in a “zoo”. I hope I am wrong!
“BLM also considers themselves as being “above” Mother Nature too…”
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) publicly published the statement that they are above the law and the 1971 Congressional Wild Horse and Burro protection LAW DOES NOT PERTAIN TO THEM! BLM stated: “The … [Congressional] Act … is not pertinent to the overall management of the wild horse and burro populations by the BLM and USFS. In general, it protects the wild horses and burros from such actions by the general populous.”
Well … apparently the BLM also considers themselves as being “above” Mother Nature too because they insist wild horses must be removed from their legally designated land (our public land) because of current widespread “drought” and BLM has been pushing this same drought agenda for at least three years. Basically these “emergency” roundups are just a front/excuse to round up as many wild horses and burros as they want, when they want and behind the public’s back with no accountability by using bait/water trapping. In order for anything to be considered normal or average there must be ups and downs. In 2011 the precipitation in Elko (mid-Nevada) was 125% of normal, 2012 was 63% of normal and as of April 2013 Elko had 78% of normal precipitation and since then [May] it has had another almost half-inch of rain and today’s forecast states, “BRIEF HEAVY RAIN” and “MODERATE TO LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN IS CURRENTLY FALLING” and “RAINFALL RATES OF ONE-QUARTER TO ONE-HALF INCH PER HOUR IS POSSIBLE IN THIS [storm] BAND”. If you were able to view THE VIDEO POSTED BY TIM SAPPINGTON of Dexter, NM, who may no longer be employed by the Valley Meat Company in Roswell, New Mexico (which is attempting to become one of the first horse slaughter plants to re-open in the U.S. since 2007) you most likely were sickened by the sheer cruelty of Sappington’s actions.
Obviously, Sappington thought those who saw the video of him mecilessly shooting a horse in the head for no reason whatsoever, would be impressed with his self-perceived manliness. Instead, viewers saw a coward; a weak little man with no compassion whatsoever.

(which is attempting to become one of the first horse slaughter plants to re-open in the U.S. since 2007), which captures an act that should bring shame to the cities of Roswell (where Tim Sappington works) and Dexter (where Tim Sappington seems to reside) and to the state of New Mexico.
Don’t let a coward hide, or let Tim Sappington’s actions go unnoticed, especially in his communities. His video shows a mindset that should frighten communities and put communities who might condone this attitude on alert that this is a shot being heard around the world, and this will adversely affect their economies, especially tourism.

In what could be the “perfect storm,” my last 2 articles tied together, because those busy bees in BLM made a feeble attempt to disparage my article about Spur Livestock (which has a BLM contract for a wild horse long term holding pasture and is co-owned by Jim Reeves) selling wild horses to a kill buyer and also seemed to illustrate points I made in my article about BLM public relations manipulation.
When wild horse advocates contacted the BLM with questions about my article and the sales of wild horses to Jim Reeves of Spur Livestock, Debbie Collins, BLM’s “Information Center Coordinator” sent an inaccurate reply (portions below). Debbie Collins’ comments are in black.

: You’ve got it backwards. On 9/9/2008, Jim Reeves bought 36 geldings, ages 11-13, from the Canon City Maintenance Facility (prison) in Colorado and on 9/23/2008, Jim Reeves bought 36 mares, ages 11-12, from the BLM’s Palomino Valley holding facility in Nevada.
“The White Horse long-term pasture is an all-gelding facility; therefore, it would not have been possible to sell him mares from the White Horse gelding facility.”
It doesn’t matter what facility the wild horses came from. The BLM states that they do not sell our wild horses to slaughter, but their contractor sure did.
“Since Mr. Reeves is a partner in Spur Livestock, he was strongly advised that any wild horses he purchased had to be kept completely separate from the wild horses in the White Horse long-term pasture.”
Nowhere in my article did I say the wild horses he bought WERE in the same long term pastures as wild horses, or that they were kept “together.” More

Did you ever wonder what made Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wild Horse & Burro Specialists so “special?” Was it because they had extensive training in equine sciences? Was it because they were range management specialists or biologists who took a BLM Wild Horse & Burro Program “training” class? Was it because they had a big shiny rodeo belt buckle?
After filing a Freedom of Information Act Request (FOIA) for documents relating to the training the BLM gives to Wild Horse & Burro Specialists, I wasn’t too surprised to see that the classes that the BLM offered, in which you, the taxpayer, paid for BLM and USDA employees to attend, (probably their travel, hotel accommodations and food), taught them to regurgitate boilerplate wild horse & burro “gather” plans(to round up the wild horses), and reviewed 82 pages out of the BLM manual (couldn’t they just read that at their desk, back at the office?).
It also included litigation, the history of the program, fertility control, the training and adoption agreement with the Mustang Heritage Foundation, and hundreds of other pages that stressed BLM’s range management and policies. Many of the instructors had backgrounds primarily in range management.
But how many pages, out of about 1,000 pages, actually dealt with wild horse behavior or health? More

Equine Welfare Groups Join in Asking Obama to Stop the Roundups
HOUSTON, (WHFF) – Wild Horse Freedom Federation’s letter writing campaign to President Obama asking him to declare a moratorium on the accelerated Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) roundups of federally protected wild horses and burros on public land has been joined and now supported by Habitat for Horses (HfH) and the Cloud Foundation (TCF).
Last month volunteer president of WHFF, R.T. Fitch, challenged the American public to write letters to the President asking him to stop the roundups so that an accurate accounting of horses on the range could take place and alternative management techniques could be applied. In return Fitch and his wife Terry agreed that they would, personally, hand carry the letters to D.C. and ensure that they reached President Obama.
Virginia Congressman Jim Moran offered to facilitate the delivery of the letters to the White House upon their receipt in D.C. and with his office’s backing the momentum for the campaign has blossomed to include the support and letters from HfH, TCF and thousands of Americans.
“This started out as a campaign where an average American couple would bring the letters of other outraged tax payers to the President for review,” says Fitch,“but over the last month it has taken on a life of it’s own and shows exactly how upset and troubled the American public is over the destruction of the last, few remaining herds of wild horses and burros on their rightful lands.” More
Wyoming began running this ad for tourism back in march of 2011 as near as I can tell. Obviously, the Wyoming board of tourism is either blissfully unaware of the ongoing activities of “Slaughterhouse Sue” Wallis, a Wyoming state representative who has a predilection for consuming horse-flesh, or maybe just hopes that you, the tourist, are not aware.
Using the imagery of our wild horse icons, Wyoming tourism encourages you to visit Wyoming and roam free! Kind of like the wild horses are meant to. I find it strange and somewhat sick that the state of Wyoming would use these icons to attempt entice visitors to the state, while at the same time entertaining ideas on how to eradicate them and possibly put them on your table.
As this video was shot with the camera’s close in, we are not able to determine just why the horses became agitated enough to charge the fence and take off running at full speed away from the pen where they were being held.
Was “Slaughterhouse Sue” approaching with a fork in one hand and a napkin in the other? Wallis, who back in November 2011 was condoning the posting of pictures of a young woman who had killed her horse and then crawled inside it for a photo op was documented by RT Fitch at Straight from the Horse’s Heart:
“People humanely kill an old horse, butcher it to use the good meat, and decide to have some fun with it, and take pictures.” continues this sack of trash.”
Was the BLM cranking up its horse harvesting machine in an attempt to obliterate yet another herd?
Was there another “professional” helicopter hitman attempting to land his machine on a horse’s back just for fun?
The fact is, we have no idea what made them bolt and run. But the imagery is clear and so is the message. These animals are meant to roam free and that means free from the prospect of harassment and being terrorized as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continues its deadly eradication campaign.
They should also be free of the “Slaughterhouse Sue’s” of the world whose interest is not healthy and enduring herds, but simply “what’s for dinner?”
I find it to be an ironic and sick message put out by Wyoming tourism:
Come to Wyoming and watch as we terrorize, capture and send to slaughter hundreds of these national icons! Save this video, by the time we are done…..there won’t be one left!

Sue Wallis recently released talking points for supporters to use with their legislators. Talking points should be concise but more importantly, accurate. Apparently, Sue Wallis did not get the memo on the latter. Not only are they inaccurate but she can’t keep her lies straight, particularly when it comes to numbers. It is not wise to disprove your own statements. She not only shoots herself in the foot but continues reloading and shooting over and over again.
Take special note that once again, the issue of food safety is completely ignored. Feel free to share this in your conversations with legislators! My apologies for a plain document in comparison to the slick PDF from Wallis. I thought content was more important than esthetics.
Today, more than 300,000 horses in America have no where to go, living out the last of their days to die painful death of starvation and thirst.
There are no statistics to substantiate this outrageous claim. And even if it were true, less than 115,000 horses are slaughtered each year so there would still be almost 200,000 horses that “have nowhere to go”. The foreign meat business only buys the number of horses needed to fill the demand, not the number of available horses. This point is worthless and a clear message that horse slaughter will not solve any problems that may exist. Slaughter is for food production and not the place to send horses “that have nowhere to go”. Note to self Sue, don’t refute your own arguments in the same statement.
The Government Accounting Office (GAO) report of June 2011 indicates that any U.S. appropriation riders and bills that seek to eliminate humane horse processing in the U.S. offer ZERO solutions.
Horse slaughter hasn’t provided any solutions and is confirmed with your first talking point. So you now have two talking points that say nothing and offer nothing. The GAO report also recommended banning horse slaughter. More

During the final days of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) “scorched earth” wild horse eradication program on Northern Nevada’s public lands private cattle were being quickly herded onto the same range that native, wild horses were cruelly removed from just hours before.
On Thursday, Feb 25th, one day prior to the abrupt cessation of the BLM’s assault upon the Antelope Complex’s wild horses, my wife Terry, Laura Leigh and I had left the mean wild horse trap site in an effort to locate a cell signal suitable to call in, as journalists, to the disappointing press conference by the BLM’s Director, Bob Abbey. As we raced across the HMA we crested a bluff only to run smack dab into one of the biggest cattle driving operation any of us had ever witnessed. When obvious truth is being ignored, it is frequently referred to as the elephant in the room. As the slaughter issue reaches the boiling point, as expected, the elephants in the room are waiting to be recognized.

The upcoming “Summit of the Horse” is an exemplary example of elephants in the room. A group of people are assembling to “take the reins back” and provide solutions. That is truly mission impossible because they would have to acknowledge that they are the cause.
They would have to acknowledge that to control the horse population, it must be done at the source; not on the back-end. If slaughter controlled the population, we wouldn’t still be discussing it after decades of slaughter.
The disinformation that will be rehashed at the “Summit” has been disproven tenfold but they charge forward repeating their mantra of illogical talking points. The most illogical claim is that the horse industry tanked because the US horse slaughter plants closed. It makes a good sound bite but there is the pesky little fact that slaughter never ended – a minor detail that is needed for the closures to have an impact.
They call the wild horses “feral” and the slaughter horses “unwanted” to denigrate them. They complain about the cost of wild horses in holding but completely ignore the hundreds of millions of dollars shelled out by taxpayers to subsidize privately owned livestock on public lands. More

The case, brought against U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar in New York, charged that the BLMs ongoing treatment of Americas federally protected wild horse herds violates the National Environmental Protection Act, as well as the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.
The BLM had dropped its immediate attempt to relocate the case from New York to Colorado or Washington D.C., making this the first case against the BLM to be heard in New York. While we are disappointed by yesterdays ruling, we are encouraged by the courts acknowledgment that the removal of these iconic horses impacts all Americans,said Matt Bershadker, senior vice president of ASPCA Anti-Cruelty. The ASPCA is committed to protecting our nations wild horses.
U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley acknowledged that the plaintiffs would undoubtedly suffer irreparable harm from the roundup of the wild horse herd. HOUSTON (SFTHH) – The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) attempt to strong arm a Federal judge into moving a wild horse related law suit out of the New York Court system, prior to a hearing, has failed. In a detailed letter submitted to the Honorable Judge William Pauley on October 12th, the BLM struggled to support a case for “change of venue” to move a suit filed by Habitat for Horses (HfH), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and The Cloud Foundation (TCF) to a more BLM friendly court in either Colorado or Washington D.C.. Today, a Temporary Restraining Order was filed by the case’s plaintiffs against the BLM in the United States District Court, Southern District of New York and a hearing has been ordered in the same venue for October 20th. The BLM will be forced to defend it’s illegal wild horse roundups in New York City.
The well researched suit contends that the BLM uses faulty and out dated data in determining which wild horse herds on U.S. public lands will be completely and totally removed from their lawful homes (zeroing out). This suit focus on the illegal roundup of the Colorado Piceance-North Douglas Herd, one of America’s federally protected wild horse herds. Likewise the finely crafted suit brings to light a variety of federal laws that the BLM knowingly and willing violates as it unleashes it’s “Wild Horse Harvesting Machine” on the tens of millions of public acres in the U.S. western states. Suit seeks immediate injunction, cites BLM’s violations of four Congressional Acts
New York City, NY (October 7, 2010)— A case filed today against Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar in federal court aims to stop the elimination of wild horses from Colorado’s North Piceance herd area. Plaintiffs Habitat for Horses (HfH), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The Cloud Foundation (TCF), Toni Moore and Dr. Don Moore challenge the BLM’s ongoing illegal treatment of wild horses residing on public lands and it’s intention to completely remove all wild horses from this area beginning October 11, 2010.
“The BLM’s ‘shoot from the hip’ policy of indiscriminately destroying and removing long standing wild horse herds has to come to an end,” says R.T.
