Duty to Warn

Examining One of the Many Ways That Healthcare Providers are Compelled to Over-prescribe Big Pharma’s Unaffordable, Often Toxic and Often Dependency-inducing Prescription Drug

Similar conflicts of interest and biases exist in virtually every field of medicine, particularly those that rely heavily on drugs or devices. It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published or to rely on the judgment of trusted physicians or authoritative medical guidelines. New Study Confirms What CCHR Has Said for Decades—Antidepressants Cause Violence

Antidepressant drugs can cause violent behavior.

That’s what mainstream press such as the LA Times and Reuters are reporting, based on a new study published in a respected medical journal, PLOS Medicine, which found young adults between the ages of 15-24, were nearly fifty percent more likely to be convicted of a homicide, assault, robbery arson, kidnapping, sexual offense and other violent crime when taking the antidepressant than when they weren’t taking the psychiatric drug.psych-drugs-suicide-300x207

To have heavy-hitters like the Los Angeles Times cover the issue is precedent setting, as the link between psychiatric drugs and violence has long been ignored by mainstream press. But the fact that antidepressants cause violence isn’t a new revelation as the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) has been at the forefront of exposing this connection for nearly two decades.

Watch the video: “CCHR: By 1991 Antidepressants were known to cause
violence & suicide”

CCHR’s efforts to expose the link between violence and antidepressants goes back to 1991 when CCHR helped organize hearings before the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where victims and experts gathered to testify that Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) cause not only suicide but violence, including homicide.

The testimony by parents, about the violent self-inflicted deaths of their young children, was gut-wrenching. Yet, despite overwhelming data provided by experts, and the first-hand accounts of suicide and violence caused by antidepressants, the FDA Advisory Committee, many of which had financial conflicts of interest with the pharmaceutical companies, refused to warn the public of the link between suicide and antidepressants, and did not provide any consideration of whether the antidepressants may be responsible for other violent behavior.

But, as was expected, increasing numbers of suicides and other violent acts continued to add up and, finally, more than a decade later, in 2004, the FDA was, again, forced to address the issue.  This time, though, the data provided by whistleblowers within the industry could not be shrugged off and more than a decade after the federal agency first knew of the deadly consequences associated with SSRIs, a “black box” warning for suicidal ideation and behavior finally was issued on all antidepressants. Yet the connection to violence and homicide continued to be ignored. To this day, despite 22 warnings on psychiatric drugs causing violence from international drug regulatory agencies, and despite the fact that t least 35 school shootings and/or school-related acts of violence have been committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 169 wounded and 79 killed, the FDA has never issued black box warnings on antidepressant drugs causing violence. We’re living in a cuckoo’s nest that would have baffled Ken Kesey. thFLBPYT2F Consider just three items at the top of our agenda.

(1) Astronomical military spending at a time when there’s nobody left in the world big enough to fight us, with the exception of international terrorists (of which the definition is any rebel faction in a Middle East loaded with factions, most of which we first created, then armed and now oppose, not because they’ve changed but because we have),

(2) the health care farce, which makes us the most expensive, least effective (at least #47 in the world) and largest laughingstock in the world, and finally,

(3) the final triumph of corporate governance in Washington, which is icing the decline and fall of both capitalism and democracy in one fell swoop.

Witness the final humiliation: Warren Buffett, the richest deckhand on this ship of fools, recently announced how he could cure all our ills in about five minutes: every time Congress screws up by deadlocking itself or filibustering over the people’s business, we suspend their Congressional salaries and munificent benefits, such as the real health care system they deny us. The result would be guaranteeing the immediate end of deficits, debt problems and unemployment. Inadequate, Warren, but like drowning lawyers, a good start.

Take the Pentagon (as Rodney Dangerfield might say: Please). While every politician is shit-hemorrhaging over the budget deficit, military spending has reached such ridiculous proportions that multi-billion dollar items (such as the recent F-35 horror) click automatically into place, even though nobody – including the Pentagon brass itself – wants the bloody thing. It’s just fixed, embedded national policy/corporate welfare that subsidizes the weapons industry. And just the other day, our formerly audacious hopeful President sent to Congress his endorsement of the largest Pentagon budget in history. More

By Dr Gary Kohls:

Medical journals were conspicuously absent from her list of co-opted institutions, but she and Horton are not the only editors who have become increasingly queasy about the power and influence of the industry. Jerry Kassirer, another former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, argues that the industry has deflected the moral compasses of many physicians and the editors of PLoS Medicine have declared that they will not become “part of the cycle of dependency…between journals and the pharmaceutical industry. Something is clearly up.

The Problem: Less to Do with Advertising, More to Do with Sponsored Trials

The most conspicuous example of medical journals’ dependence on the pharmaceutical industry is the substantial income from advertising, but this is, I suggest, the least corrupting form of dependence. The advertisements may often be misleading and the profits worth millions, but the advertisements are there for all to see and criticize. Doctors may not be as uninfluenced by the advertisements as they would like to believe, but in every sphere, the public is used to discounting the claims of advertisers.

The much bigger problem lies with the original studies, particularly the clinical trials, published by journals. Far from discounting these, readers see randomized controlled trials as one of the highest forms of evidence. A large trial published in a major journal has the journal’s stamp of approval (unlike the advertising), will be distributed around the world, and may well receive global media coverage, particularly if promoted simultaneously by press releases from both the journal and the expensive public-relations firm hired by the pharmaceutical company that sponsored the trial. For a drug company, a favorable trial is worth thousands of pages of advertising, which is why a company will sometimes spend upwards of a million dollars on reprints of the trial for worldwide distribution. The doctors receiving the reprints may not read them, but they will be impressed by the name of the journal from which they come. The quality of the journal will bless the quality of the drug. More

Pertinent Quotes from Marcia Angell, MD and Author, Helen Epstein

Note: Dr Marcia Angell was fired from her long-held job as executive editor of the once prestigious New England Journal of Medicine because of an editorial that she wrote criticizing the pharmaceutical industry, criticisms that she elaborated on in her book, “The Truth About the Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It”.

Here are some quotes from Dr Angell’s writings and/or interviews. Some of them were published at Jon Rappoport’s website:

War On Health

We have long maintained that the FDA is a threat to public health.  Routinely approving drugs for use on the public that they have neither tested nor questioned, tens of thousands of people die each year as a result.  No one is prosecuted.  No one is held accountable.  Not one pharmaceutical CEO will be held accountable or liable.

At best, this is racketeering. At worst, it is aiding and abetting in mass murder.

It would appear that money fixes everything.  Vioxx killed an estimated 400,000 people…….before Merck pulled it off the market.  Conservative writer and activist Ron Unz  has concluded that data indicate that the death toll from Vioxx was closer to 500,000 just in 2004.

This agency, which has been responsible for more deaths than many wars, the hyped up gun arguments, and assorted other hot button topics, has never once been smacked down for its collusion with its pharmaceutical corporate partners.  And never once has it been held liable for the massive number of deaths that are a result of its “for profit at the expense of human life” business practices.

About half of the drugs put into the market will be recalled in five years because they cause death, heart attacks and numerous other adverse effects…..and not one FDA “I was just following orders” employee on any level will see one day in jail.

Maybe public hangings should be reconsidered.  How many people are going to be seriously harmed or die before we close this abomination down?
