we have the widest possible choice of healthy foods.
But in fact, over the course of the 20th century, our food
system was co-opted by corporate forces whose
interests do not lie in providing the public with fresh, healthy,
sustainably-produced food. Fortunately for
America, an alternative emerged from the counter-culture
of California in the late 1960s and early 1970s,
where a group of political anti-corporate protesters–led
by Alice Waters–voiced their dissent by creating
a food chain outside of the conventional system.
The unintended result was the birth of a vital
local-sustainable-organic food movement which has
brought back taste and variety to our tables.

It’s official: the “mandatory” GMO labeling rule will obscure more than it makes transparent. Action Alert!

The USDA has released its final GMO labeling rule, and it’s not good. As we feared when the agency released its proposal earlier this year, the so-called GMO labeling law will apply only to a narrow set of foods. Congress and the USDA have offered a number of loopholes and exemptions to food companies, undermining any semblance of a consumer’s right to know. It’s as if the USDA asked the food industry to write the rule themselves.

The problems start right at the foundation. The agency has decided to use the term “bioengineered”—a term many Americans may not be familiar with—rather than GMO. When the proposal was released, we pointed out that this is straight out of an Orwellian playbook. Many Americans know the term “GMO” and can connect it to the labeling debate—so the government decides to use a different term that sounds more innocuous. If the government was actually concerned with communicating information clearly to consumers, they would simply use the term “GMO” and not other terminology with which Americans may not be familiar.

The problems continue with the definition of “bioengineered.” The final rule defines bioengineered as a food that 1) contains genetic material that has been modified through in vitro recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) techniques and 2) for which the modification could not otherwise be obtained through conventional breeding or found in nature”—essentially, combining DNA from two different sources, usually two different organisms.

Our guest tonight is Sinikka Crosland, Exec. Dir. of Canadian Horse Defence Coalition, people and national groups that have joined together to ban the slaughter of equines for human consumption in Canada, as well as the export of live horses to other countries for the same purpose.

Sinikka will talk about horse slaughter in Canada, and the  7,000 horses transported live by air  from Canada to Japan each year for slaughter.  3 or 4 large horses are crammed in wooden crates with little room to move around, let alone lie down to rest.  No food or water is provided during the grueling journey to another continent.  Canadian legislation permits horses to be transported without food and water for up to 36 hours, but sometimes, due to flight delays, the 36-hour period is breached.

The carrier responsible for shipping these horses to their deaths is Atlas Air, Inc., based in Purchase, New York.

Create seeds which are genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) and patent them. Then convince farmers about their “safety” but also include the “greater harvest and more profit“ angle, even if some of it is untrue. But here is the rest of the story.

136078972_40b7e8eb82_m1There is an increasing demand for food worldwide, but presently there is a massive agenda by UC Davis, the EU and the UK to partner with biotech corporations in order to monopolize the food supply through unsafe patented seeds while replacing older hybrid and heirloom seeds that have been around for decades. And what happens if
corporations control the food supply with certain seeds that will only produce one plant and the seed from that plant will never produce another seed? The commercial or hobby farmer will either have to repurchase more seeds from those same suppliers again or they could purchase the older reproducing seeds as long as they are available.

But what if the good seeds which are non-GMO’s are banned by governments? Well, it is on the drawing board.

Big Agri, paired with the world ruling governments, are likened to oligarchies such as the European Union, and are already trying to make it illegal to grow, reproduce, or trade any vegetable seed or trees that has not been tested and approved by the government, more specifically the “EU Plant Variety Agency.” Yes, this is an outrageous agenda and the new law, if passed, basically puts the government in charge of all plants and seeds in Europe, and prevents home gardeners from growing their own plants from non-regulated seeds.” And if growers did break the rules, they will be considered criminals. Center for Food Safety backs up concerns about 2,4-D, an “approved” herbicide BLM uses on public lands

I made a public comment and posted an open letter to the BLM pointing out some possible risks of the use of the herbicide 2,4-D in the BLM’s Environmental Assessment for the “Desatoya Mountains Habitat Resiliency, Health, and Restoration Project” in Nevada (2012).  Recently, the Center for Food Safety has also voiced concerns about the possible risks of 2,4-D.

The Center for Food Safety recently wrote this:

Vermont Passes No-Strings-Attached GMO Labeling Law!

imagesVermont consumers will be the first in the nation to have a clear choice.

 

On April 23, the Vermont legislature passed a bill mandating that all GMO foods be labeled by July 2016. The bill will now go to Governor Peter Shumlin, who has said he will sign the legislation into law.

Although Connecticut and Maine have already passed GMO labeling laws, Vermont’s bill is unique: unlike its New England neighbors, Vermont decided not to include a “trigger” provision in its bill. So while Connecticut’s and Maine’s bills won’t activate unless enough nearby states also pass GMO labeling laws, Vermont will immediately move forward with the labeling of GMO products.

Not everyone is celebrating. Karen Batra, spokeswoman for the Biotechnology Industry Organization, lamented that, “It’s disappointing that Vermont sees a need to implement such a costly and confusing food labeling program, and that it takes this action despite unequivocal scientific evidence supporting the safety of foods containing genetically modified ingredients. Any state-based law requiring the labeling of foods that contain GMOs creates extra costs for farmers, food manufacturers, distributors, grocers and consumers.”

Ms. Batra’s statement is riddled with inaccuracies. In point of fact, GMO labeling won’t raise costs for consumers or farmers! Moreover, despite what the biotech industry says, GMO foods have not “unequivocally” been proven to be safe—far from it. In fact, in animal studies, they’ve been linked to cancer, birth defects, and digestive issues. It is true that much more research needs to be done about GMO safety, including possible epigenetic effects that would only show up in future generations, but industry has done everything in its power, which is considerable, to squelch such research and those researchers brave enough to undertake it.

The DARK Act is Here: Denying Americans’ Right-to-Know

Big Food is trying to kill your right to know if the food you’re eating is genetically engineered.

With their anti-labeling allies like Monsanto and Dow, the Grocery Manufacturers Association has teamed up with Koch brothers-backed Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas to introduce a federal bill that would deny your right to know.

The bill, which we’re calling the “Deny Americans the Right-to-Know Act (DARK Act),” would:

Prevent states from adopting their own GE labeling laws.

Block any attempt by states to make it illegal for food companies to put a “natural” label on products that contain GE ingredients.

Prevent the Food and Drug Administration from requiring companies to label GE ingredients and instead continue a failed “voluntary” labeling policy.

The bill–crafted by the Grocery Manufacturers Association-led Coalition for Safe and Affordable Food, has just been introduced by Rep. Pompeo, and has reportedly picked up two co-sponsors: Reps. Butterfield (D-NC 1st district) and Blackburn (R-TN 7th district). All three lawmakers serve on the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over GE food labeling.

Tell Congress not to squash your right to know about genetically engineered foods!

It’s no surprise that industry chose the Kansas Republican as their cheerleader. Pompeo was the single largest recipient of campaign funds from Koch Industries in 2010. It’s clear that corporate money = legislative favors with Congressman Pompeo.

And now the Koch brothers are teaming up with Monsanto? Monsanto was the single largest contributor against the recent Washington State ballot initiative to label GE foods. Between Washington State and California, Monsanto, along with GMA and other agribusiness companies, have contributed over $67 million to keep consumers in the dark.

So what’s wrong with “voluntary” GE food labeling? In a word: everything. It is grossly misleading for industry—let alone members of Congress—to continue trumpeting the idea that voluntary labeling will solve the overwhelming consumer demand for labeling in the marketplace. In the 13 years that FDA has allowed companies to voluntarily label genetically engineered foods, not one single company has done so.

Without mandatory labeling of GE foods, consumers are being left in the dark about the foods we are purchasing and feeding our families. In 2013, over 50 GE labeling bills were introduced in 26 states, including Hawaii, Washington, Indiana, Missouri, and Vermont.

This industry-backed bill will cut these state labeling bills off at the knees and replace them with an undemocratic, hollow “voluntary” labeling scheme that does nothing to address consumer interests and only serves to allow corporations to deny us our right to know.

Human or not so much? Life after Vaccines and other assaults on human existence

Between the bio-pirates who are destroying the natural world with their unnatural frankenfood popuproducts and crops, and vaccine makers and pushers of other pharmaceutical assaults on the populations of the world,  we are adrift in a sea of mad scientists. Life on earth is being irrevocably altered.

The growing damage to the environment, food quality, and quality of life on this planet is readily apparent.  As a result, at what point do we lose our humanity?  And, at what point will genetic testing and DNA results be used to determine that many of us no longer qualify to be listed as “human”?  If this should happen, what will be done with, or to, those deemed to not have a high enough percentage of human DNA to qualify us as anything more than a lesser animal?  Further, who would make this determination?

At this point in time, this may seem to be far-fetched.  But try as I might, I cannot come up with one rational, logical reason for injecting via vaccines, the DNA of other human beings (human diploid cells), dogs, pigs, chickens and what ever else ran through the lab that day into the bodies of newborns, right up to those in old age.  These strands of DNA from animals and other humans are transfective.  This means they seek out the existing DNA and attach themselves to it, literally infecting it with foreign information, altering the original DNA forever.  The child is no longer the person they were intended to be, they can’t be because the infection caused by foreign non-related species has permanently damaged and changed the original DNA.  This can change not only the mental attributes, but may also begin altering the physical attributes in successive generations as the new genetic expressions override the original DNA.

In fact, those who create these lethal injections have no way of knowing or predicting how these foreign genes are going to affect anyone, much less the overall population.  What is worse is that they apparently are conducting experiments on the public at large to see just what does happen when you shoot a human being full of chicken or dog DNA.

The effects of vaccines on the elderly appears to manifest itself in an epidemic of brain decay in various forms as the number of elderly claimed to be suffering from these diseases is steadily increasing as targeted vaccines for the elderly rise simultaneously.

As the number of childhood vaccines increases, so do the number of cases of autism and other brain function disorders.

Transgenic: One jab at a time ?

Knowing as most of us do these days, that few governments around the world put any value in their populations, what would make any one of us think that our government, notorious for its disdain for the general public, would have our best interest at heart?

(Q). Why would our benevolent (sarc) government stand idly by, while the very building blocks of life, our genetic structure is damaged and manipulated by pharmaceutical manufacturers and other collectives of sociopath’s as these fools tamper with the structure of our very existence?  More

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) estimates that the waters in 27% of the southern half of Minnesota have reached critical levels in nitrogen contamination and that overall 41% of all lakes and streams have far higher than accepted and so-called “safe levels” of nitrogen contamination in addition to atrazine and glysophate contamination.

Industrialized corporate farming Chemical Footprints

Our family farms have virtually disappeared.  In their place are massive, squalid industrial farming and ranching operations.  The result of this industrialization is low quality food contaminated with vaccines, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides and hundreds, if not thousands of chemicals we are not even allowed to know about.

The conversion, predominately over the last thirty years, from traditional farming to chemical barn_dees4farming is devastating the land and water, especially in agricultural states such as those in the mid-west.  The result is chemical contamination and toxicity of land and water, now reaching critical levels and accumulating in our rivers and streams.  Many of these same rivers and streams are emptying into the Mississippi, Cedar and Missouri Rivers and end up in the Gulf of Mexico contributing to the “dead zone”; an oxygen depleted area in the Gulf where nothing grows or lives.  This area is enlarging each year.  Much of our historically productive agricultural land and our water is on the verge of being reduced to a chemical laden soup unfit for use.

While the carping continues by vested interests regarding our so-called carbon footprints, and while the government continues its already debunked “global warming” scam, may be its time someone looked into the toxic chemical footprint being imprinted on our land and in our water by  industrialized corporate farming.  The promises of bigger more valuable crops, capable of feeding the world have been dismissed as the reality of agricultural monopolies protected by government, produce less than desirable crops, severely lacking in nutritional value. The letter below was received from Rep. Collin Peterson, 7th District, Minnesota.  Peterson’s 1267436152letter details his love of gmo’s and his belief that no science exist to substantiate the claims that gmo is harmful to human health.  With numerous countries around the world banning the use of gmo seeds, the importing of gmo products into their countries, and the massive number of scientific studies that were actually done to document the threat to the environment and public health that these frankenfood creations are causing, it appears Mr. Peterson is oblivious to all.  Makes you wonder what planet this guy is on.

Dear Mr. Peterson:  I doubt that you appreciate hearing from me or anyone else who isn’t on the bio-piracy wagon.  I am fully aware that this is a very lucrative association for you , not only politically, but personally as well.

Since the first genetically engineered crops became commercially available in the mid-1990s, U.S. soybean, cotton, and corn farmers have rapidly adopted them.

Farmers have not rapidly adopted genetically engineered crops unless you considered being coerced, bullied, terrorized, threatened with lawsuits or finding that bio-pirates such as Monsanto have monopolized the market and have the Supreme Court of The United States firmly in their pocket and also a cushy little seat in the White House to protect their interests, willing adoption of these crops.

The overtaking of several sectors of the federal government by private corporations who routinely use congress and the president to codify their unlawful activity to expand their monopolies has just received a huge gift package from those fine jackasses in the District of Criminals. Monsanto just received a payoff on its massive funding of campaign contributions on both sides of the isle, having the favor returned in the form of a free pass on any kind of control or any kind of judicial penalty on their collective species of invasive seeds.

The Continuing Resolution (CR) which has been pitched as a crisis bill because otherwise the world wouldfarmer3_dees come to an end, included a so-called sneak attack by Monsanto that would give it a free pass. The Monsanto Rider avoids USDA controls and eliminates any judicial system interference. Obviously unconstitutional, the rider violates the right to due process by those harmed by this corporation and establishes a clear pattern of collusion against the public at large.  No one actually wants Monsanto’s products and the grassroots resistance to these toxic crops has been non-stop.  Both houses of congress of course ignored the public backlash as they voted on a full scale corporate hiney hugging love fest.

Through a carefully constructed system of market manipulations, predatory practices, and with the complete cooperation of the USDA and the courts, Monsanto has relentlessly worked to end any farming endeavors that have not been consumed by their market monopoly.  It also helped out immensely that Michael Taylor, alleged former attorney for Monsanto was somehow appointed to the newly created and unconstitutional office of “Food Czar” right inside the White House!  I cannot help but wonder what input he may have had in this rotten deal.

The actual intent of this rider was to relieve congress, the courts and federal agencies such as the USDA, from having to publicly expose themselves as bought and paid for.  This rider actually serves to relieve them of having to expose themselves to any scrutiny or to require them to take any position arbitrary to Monsanto that might cause the  money train to run off the rails. Many imagine an Orwellian nightmare world in which people will be rounded up and shot en mass, like Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pohl Pot disposed of their “undesirables.” However, the actual means by which the elite will achieve their 90% reduction in world population will be much subtler than that – and you won’t even see it coming.

In fact, the job is already half done. The abortions, sterilzations, contraception and the effects of social engineering that have occurred over the last fifty years have already taken their toll and the effects of this will continue well into this century.

While some who consider themselves to be aware are railing against “zero population growth” policies, the fact is that the nations of the developed West have already passed the threshold of “zero population growth,” years ago, and are now into population decline.

The effects of this can be seen mostly in Europe, in particular, Russia and Germany, but it affects the whole of Europe. Also affected is Japan and the deaths that have occurred from the recent earthquakes and tsunamis there, as well as those that will result from radiation, only add to the problem. Not only is population decline occurring in Europe and Japan, but also in the United States, Australia, Asia, Mexico, and even in the Middle East, contrary to the popularly held idea that the Third World’s population is “exploding.” This is all being driven by the same factors affecting birth rates in western nations, of course, as these factors are indiscriminate and global.

Thus, it is a demographic fact that, by 2050, the world’s population will plateau at 9 billion and then precipitously drop like a rock throughout the remainder of the century. This is not a “theory,” it is not even a prediction. It is a fact and is guaranteed to occur, due to the aforementioned means of population reduction that have already happened.

But, this is to say nothing of the effects that will be added to this by the current covert means of depopulation that we are being continually assaulted with right now. Aside from the usual effects of the toxic food, water and air we take in, there is the unseen specter of Bisphenol-A (BPA), which is used as a softener in plastics, from the toys your child plays with to the plastic wrap you put last night’s GMO leftovers in. BPA, which is virtually unavoidable if you live in the modern world at all, is everywhere and is responsible for ensuring a large part of the decline in births by rendering the males of all species sterile.

So, while it is inevitable that the population will decline throughout the twenty-first century, the decline will be greatly accelerated and deepened by the hundreds of chemical and biological agents we come in contact with on a daily basis.

All products are presumed to be safe and effective. We make this presumption because the label says they are safe and effective and we know we can trust the FDA to enforce honest labeling. (sarc) 

The label also lists only the active ingredient(s), and these can amount to only a small percentage of the actual contents of the product.  So what is the remaining bulk of the product contents?  You can’t know that.  The inert ingredients, said to be mostly comprised of components necessary to make the active ingredient “active”, do not have to be disclosed because they are proprietary rights, protected trade secrets, none of your damn business.  Basically, chemical product producers can add the dust off their floors to the products you are buying and it matters not.

Besides, the inert ingredients can cause everything from cancer to brain damage and who wants to be held liable for that?  People might want to sue you for intentionally exposing them to hazardous and deadly toxins used in a product that really wasn’t safe and effective, and what would happen to corporate profits if they did? 

Because the known hazards of the products are never fully disclosed we have no idea what we are actually buying and using.  Safe and effective is misleading at the very least and deadly at the very worst.

I wonder why the FDA hasn’t gone after these producers of toxic chemical applications for misbranding and adulteration?    More

By now you’ve heard how President Obama and his Monsanto Administration have plowed through approvals of three more genetically engineered products, including GE alfalfa.  Well, here’s something else you should know:

To produce its Round-Up Ready Alfalfa seeds, Monsanto partnered with a company called Forage Genetics International, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Land O’Lakes dairy co-op. That’s right, Land O’Lakes stands to make a fortune from polluting our food supply with untested and unlabeled GMOs.

To protest, you could sign one of the many petitions going around that will likely just be ignored.  But there’s another way to show your disapproval of genetically engineered Round-Up Ready Alfalfa:  Boycott all Land O’Lakes products — its butter, cheese, eggs, speads, margarine, seasonings, creams, cocoa and cappuccino mixes, sour cream and milk.  All of them.

You have the power to economically punish Land O’Lakes — the owner of Forage Genetics, Monsanto’s partner in crime — for its role in polluting the food chain with untested and unlabeled GMOs, increasing the use of toxic glyphosate herbicide, and potentially destroying the organic beef and dairy feed market by loudly refusing to support Land O’Lakes with your dollars.

Tell all your friends to go to all the supermarkets in their area and let the check-out clerks know that they’re boycotting Land O’Lakes products until they are out of the GMO business, loud enough for other shoppers to hear.  And next, stop by the store manager’s desk and tell him about the boycott.

Send Land O’Lakes and other companies a clear message:  HAY you — We’re FED UP with GMOs in our food supply!

And to make sure Land O’Lakes knows why its sales are down, contact its president and CEO Chris Policinski and let him know you won’t be buying Land O’Lakes products anymore because you don’t want genetically engineered food or animal feed:

 Why is “free trade at any expense” reserved only for multi-national corporations?  Why is every other sector of the economy supposed to be allowed to engage in a free-for-all at the entire countries expense, but when it comes to family and independent agriculture there are literally hundreds of thousands of regulations, limitations, rules, and requirements, licensing, and forfeiture of rights,  spanning multiple agencies who spend the bulk of their funding on “enforcement” of what usually amounts to nothing less than an interference in trade, profit and viability and which many times constitute an open assault on Constitutionally protected property and individual rights.

I can only imagine the salivating occurring behind the scenes in the District of Criminals, as the corporations and interested parties including the World Trade Organization, Codex Committees and other vested stakeholders anticipate the passage of S.510, the fake food safety bill.  Should this bill pass, we as a country will be officially divested not only of our sovereignty but of our independence.  No country in the history of the world has survived for long without a strong and independent agricultural sector.  Take that away, and the fall of the country soon follows.  No nation that cannot, or will not, feed its own people, ever survives.  Independent agriculture is and always has been the backbone and the underlying support for economic stability and security.  It is this support and security that S.510 seeks to destroy. 

S.510 is not about food safety; it is however the last lynchpin in the seizure of food production and supply that was begun under Bush the Lesser.  Control the food; control the people.  

This same model envisioned in S.510 was used in recent years in Poland.  An estimated 60% of Polish farms are now gone.  In India, more than 8 million farmers have left their farms as a result of similar systems implemented by the World Trade Organization on behalf of bio-pirates of all kinds.  Here in the US an estimated 1/3 of all farms that existed in 2000, have now vanished.  We are, according to farmaid.org , losing 3-500 farms and ranches every week as the industrialized corporate machine being driven by congress and its agencies rolls across our land.  Food safety never was the issue.  Food as a Weapon is another story. If one is going to make the statement that Genetically Modified Food is safe to consume in an AP article, then one should utilize studies that actually discuss that issue – right? Well according to the above article – which strings together various individuals statements both supporting and opposing consumption of GMO’s – that is not necessarily the case:

David Ervin of Portland State University in Oregon, who chaired the committee that wrote the report, said it found no large-scale environmental risks associated with the current genetically engineered corn, cotton and soybeans in the United States. As for future crops, “you just have to be very cautious,” depending on the nature of the plants, he says.

The report, which did not consider health impacts of eating genetically engineered crops, did recommend large-scale studies of ecological effects of such crops, Ervin said.

Including in the opening paragraphs is this statement:

Scientists have already determined that it is safe to eat. They are weighing other factors, including environmental risks, after two days of intense hearings.

I’d like to point out an Opinion Poll with some really valid comments/questions put forward. Over 70% of the individuals who chose to participate in this poll did not give a blanket “Yes – I’d chow down on GMO Salmon”. Questions raised included everything from concerns over hormones, eel DNA inserts, FDA truthfulness, environmental changes, population control, and some “interesting” facts thrown in to keep everyone guessing.

Of course depending on the Alphabet agencies to actually read the studies in reference to this issue is like expecting Congress to actually read the bills before they are voted on. Why should these “blue panelled committees” read about the issues when the ambiguous “Scientific Staff” has already chewed up and spit out the “facts” in digested form? In my world digestion produces fecal matter, not unlike the “facts” which are being sprayed about up on the Hill. More

Stop the presses, hold the panic, and stop “Egg-agerating” Congress Critters. Before pushing the American People into panic mode and blindly rushing through yet another “Save the American Consumer From Themselves Bill”, it might behoove legislators to read the law currently in place that is specifically designed to stop the contamination, production, distribution and consumption of tainted eggs. True it took 6 years of kicking and screaming to bring the CFO’s to the table and not all have to comply until 2012, but why rewrite what has already been written?

The FDA’s Egg Safety Rule

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Final Rule on egg safety, Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage and Transportation (21 CFR Parts 16 and 118), requires shell egg producers to implement measures to prevent Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) from contaminating eggs on the farm and further growth during storage and transportation. U.S. egg farmers have and continue to participate in food safety programs like the SE Final Rule in order to protect against food borne illness and provide a safe, high quality product. The rule was first proposed on September 22, 2004 and after several comment periods, went into effect on September 8, 2009.  The rule requires egg producers with 50,000 or more birds or persons who store and/or transport eggs to comply with all regulations by July 9, 2010.  Egg producers with less than 50,000 birds but more than 3,000 must comply by July 9, 2012.

Just mulling about the concern of food safety, here is a thought for one to ponder. According to the Wright County Egg Recall press release posted on the FDA recall information page, the first Julian Date of eggs believed to be contaminated was 136 (May 16, 2010) and the last known 225 (August 13, 2010). So between three different production CFAO’s involved over an 89 day period potentially 5,617,977 contaminated eggs were produced per day.

So here is where the process becomes interesting. Where does the responsibility lie? The USDA is passing it off to the FDA who is passing it off to the USDA…..I think we see where this is going. If they only had “more cooperation among Agencies”….something like S 510. More

I was heartened to read on PPJ of Haiti’s decision to not compromise their food sovereignty through rejecting the U.S. Governments “assistance” of Monsanto GM seed.

However, news this morning from BBC tells us that Monsanto again has issues with “quality control” through its distribution points.

A genetically modified (GM) variety of maize banned in the EU has been sown accidentally across Germany.

The NK603 variety has been planted in seven states. The seed supplier, US firm Pioneer Hi-Bred, called the level of contamination “minute”.

It is not clear how the mistake occurred, but it could cost farmers millions of euros, as crops will now have to be destroyed.

The tragedy here is that apparently the “minute mistake” was known of 4 months ago although which “officials” and “bureaucrats” are being referred to is not clear:

Greenpeace says that officials knew about the contamination in early March, but that because of bureaucratic delays farmers are only now being warned.

“This is the biggest GM crop scandal in Germany to date,” said a Greenpeace agriculture expert, Alexander Hissting. More

“Grant said Monsanto would create a new product offering that would combine Roundup with complementary chemicals for a new weed control regimen at a lower cost than farmers are paying today.”

Monsanto Co. said on Thursday it will restructure its herbicide products in an effort to help combat the spreading environmental woes of herbicide-resistant weeds, also known as “super weeds,” which many critics have blamed on the chemical giant.

“We need to get in front of this,” Monsanto chairman Hugh Grant said in a conference call with analysts.

Grant acknowledged that weed resistance was a problem for U.S. cotton farmers, and was emerging as a bigger problem for soybean farmers. But he said the issue was not yet a big problem for corn farmers.

Monsanto is the world’s leading seed company and purveyor of the popular Roundup herbicide.

DYERSBURG, Tenn. — For 15 years, Eddie Anderson, a farmer, has been a strict adherent of no-till agriculture, an environmentally friendly technique that all but eliminates plowing to curb erosion and the harmful runoff of fertilizers and pesticides.

But not this year.

On a recent afternoon here, Mr. Anderson watched as tractors crisscrossed a rolling field — plowing and mixing herbicides into the soil to kill weeds where soybeans will soon be planted.

Just as the heavy use of antibiotics contributed to the rise of drug-resistant supergerms, American farmers’ near-ubiquitous use of the weedkiller Roundup has led to the rapid growth of tenacious new superweeds.

To fight them, Mr. Anderson and farmers throughout the East, Midwest and South are being forced to spray fields with more toxic herbicides, pull weeds by hand and return to more labor-intensive methods like regular plowing.

“We’re back to where we were 20 years ago,” said Mr. Anderson, who will plow about one-third of his 3,000 acres of soybean fields this spring, more than he has in years. “We’re trying to find out what works.” More
