Tonight we talk with Dr. Dave Moskowitz who will speak about the coronavirus and what can be done. Dr. Moskowitz is using two new protocols in preventing and treating COVID-19.
For prevention, we’re looking at the usual mast cell inhibitors:
- Antihistamines (both 1st and 2nd generation), and
- Monteleukast (Singulair) 10 mg qd.
- Quercetin, dissolved in alcohol: 1 g/day: a plant flavonoid said to inhibit the MRGPRX2 receptor. It’s contained in onions, grapes and many fruits and vegetables. It has very little solubility [2%] and therefore bioavailability in water.
For treatment, we’re using asthma medications:
- Nasal steroids (Flonase, Nasocort) on day 1 of symptoms.
- Oral Prednisone: started w/in 48 hr of nasal steroids if symptoms worsen. Rapid pulse and taper over 2 wks with a slower taper for persistent shortness of breath
- Albuterol and long-acting (formeterol, salbutamol) beta2 agonist inhalers
Now that we’re interacting with patients, our goal is to keep them from going to the hospital. The treatment is being modified with each patient, ie we’re running an adaptive trial.
