Guest: Arlene Mullen with Dialysis Advocates (dialysisadvocates.com)

This is another of those federally funded programs like Hospice, that causes the premature deaths of patients as a matter of routine and for profit.

In another case of those self-regulated, no oversight, systems created as a supposed public benefit, the dialysis industry profits from the patients it was created to serve.  Nephrology groups own the contracts and provide no statistics on the effectiveness of the services they deliver.   In a system that routinely blames the patient as an excuse to terminate dialysis services, patients are ejected from the program and may not re-enter it except as an emergency room patient.  In many instances the patients are denied access to their medical files and are not allowed to review or respond to charges and allegations made against them by staff members.  These charges are used to justify the ending of treatment….. no evidence of truthfulness needed of course.

The Stark Law is a healthcare fraud and abuse law that prohibits physicians from referring patients for certain designated health services paid for by Medicare to any entity in which they have a “financial relationship.” The federal government interprets the term “financial relationship” broadly to include any direct or indirect ownership or investment interest by the referring physician, as well as any financial interests held by any of the physician’s immediate family members.

Arlene Mullin — advocate, 20 years experience guiding patients and their families through all aspects of End Stage Renal Disease treatments.  Mullin has served patients in a majority of states, engaging both Medicare and state health authorities towards resolution of quality care issues at clinics.  Comprehensive knowledge of care issues on clinic level.  She was instrumental in getting the hearings on aging before the U.S. Senate in 2000 where she testified on patient care issue within the dialysis industry.
