The timber rattlesnake and eastern diamondback rattlesnake both populate the geographical areas of the original thirteen colonies. Their use as a symbol of the American colonies can be traced back to the publications of Benjamin Franklin. In 1751, he made the first reference to the rattlesnake in a satirical commentary published in his Pennsylvania Gazette. It had been the policy of Britain to send convicted criminals to America, so Franklin suggested that they thank the British by sending rattlesnakes to England.[1]

Dear Mr. President,

The American people understand your frustration in dealing with the Debt Ceiling. I personally understand that it is your impression that those of us “outside” of Washington do not have the mental capacity to be aware of the conditions we now face.  Contrary to professional political individuals – you Sir are wrong.

Now, what makes today’s stalemate so dangerous is that it has been tied to something known as the debt ceiling — a term that most people outside of Washington have probably never heard of before.

Respectfully I would like to point out that we do understand. That is why last election cycle we placed (through the electoral process) over 100 new Legislators replacing those who chose to “go along” as Legislators are want to do for special interest purposes. While skewed media pointed out that “only” 32% of Tea Party Candidates won their elections, the American Public cheered because this is the beginning of the “Change” you proposed to support in the Political landscape.

We, Sir, are tired. Our Country was founded on the concept of personal liberty through personal responsibility – a concept you might perhaps have difficulty understanding with Public Education not covering The Constitutional Basics due to the busy schedule of “other” subjects. Collectivism and shared sacrifice were not written into the Constitution nor the Laws of these fledgling United States. We have seen from time to time the uprising in spirit and voices against the return to the British Colonialism that caused our ancestors to flee their Native Land. That is the essence of who we are. Americans has risen from the huddled masses suffering through unforgiving weather and hardship to embrace a concept never seen before in the History – Freedom by Choice not Permission.

In case you have forgotten what the “real” world is like, perhaps I will take a moment to remind you. In the real world neighbors support neighbors without the intervention of Nationalistic Government. We walk the streets long after the “political moments” have passed, offering assistance while you move to another “crisis” for your moment in the Sun. In short, the majority of Americans truly do not need Government to get about our daily lives. Our goal is to have the Federal Government move back to where it belongs –  a little piece of swampland known as Washington, D.C.

In some ways your frustration must be heartfelt because you realize how truly impotent the office of the President has become. Even an Autopen can replicate your signature while you are attending some gala event thousands of miles away. In essence, the President of the United States has become nothing more than a figurehead destined to be manipulated by lobbyist groups and political gamers.

Perhaps you were not aware of that fact. After all, your experience was limited to fine speech presentation and Assistant Professorship at a mediocre University in the middle of nowhere. In the two years of residing in the White House, it must be a shock to realize that your main job is to be a foil for the pandering of the American Political System.

No matter which quotes that are pulled from obscurity, nor the factual issue that the Debt Ceiling has been raised 74 times in the past 49 years – it should be pointed out that the American “Patriots” are no longer willing to provide time in days or weeks for this situation to be rectified. We now know the power of the unelected electorate (us) and we will wield the Sword of Justice and Freedom effectively and often.

In short we are not interested in pandering,  empty threats or bi-partisan shenanigans. The American Public does not want the Debt Ceiling raised. They no longer wish for the continual deal making between party leadership that you so aptly point out leaves no party blameless. That is why there are 13 new senators and 93 new representatives in this Congress who are not attached to that failed history. We will see in a week if that remains true. As the automaton in charge, it is Congress and the Executive Branches responsibility to fulfill our wishes. If not, Elections are right around the corner – members of either party who capitulated need not apply.

Respectfully,

John and Jane Q. Public
