Alert of the Week:

Stop NAIS – Protect your right to farm and to eat local food!

The USDA has proposed a rule to require all farms and ranches where animals are raised to be registered in a federal database under the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) for existing disease control programs. The draft rule covers programs for cattle, sheep, goats, and swine. It also sets the stage for the entire NAIS program to be mandated for everyone, including anyone who owns even one livestock animal, for example, a single chicken or a horse. It is critical that the USDA and Congress hear from the hundreds of thousands of people who will be adversely affected by the NAIS program. This includes not only animal owners, but also consumers who care about local and sustainable foods, taxpayers who object to wasteful government programs, and advocates for a safer food system.

Vote on Stimulus Bill Delayed!

There is still time to make a difference! Last night FAIR heard from sources on the Hill that Leaders in the House and Senate had deliberately stripped both E-Verify amendments from the Stimulus Bill (H.R.1). This means that the nearly trillion dollar spending bill will likely create as many as 300,000 jobs for illegal aliens using taxpayer money. It is outrageous that Congressional leaders would deliberately remove provisions that would protect American workers while unemployment is skyrocketing.

However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has just announced that the vote on the Stimulus Bill will be delayed until at least tomorrow (Friday). This gives us one more day to call House and Senate Leadership and demand that they include both E-Verify amendments in the Stimulus Bill. These amendments do the following: (1) reauthorize E-Verify for five years, and (2) require all businesses and contractors receiving taxpayer-funded stimulus money to use E-Verify.

THERE IS NO TIME TO LOSE! Please call House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and tell them:

  • Going after employers who hire illegal workers is the key to returning legitimacy to our immigration system.
  • E-Verify, a voluntary program, is one of the most effective tools employers have to help ensure their workforce is legal. This program is set to expire March 6th and must be reauthorized immediately as part of the Stimulus Bill.
  • It is completely outrageous and a betrayal of the American worker for Congress to pass a $1 trillion jobs bill without requiring employers who receive taxpayer money to use E-Verify. Congress must require that all recipients of stimulus money use E-Verify.

Please call House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at 202.225.4965 and 202.225.0100

Please call Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at 202.224.3542 and 202.224.5556

State Numbers for Harry Reid: 775.686.5750 or 775.882.7343 or 702.388.5020

District Number for Nancy Pelosi: 415.556.4862

Remember, there is still time to make a difference if you act NOW. To learn more about E-Verify, read FAIR’s talking points.

“First They Came for the Cows: An Activist’s Story” first novel about NAIS

February 6, 2009 – Enosburg Falls, VT In the late summer of 2004, at a raw milk ice cream social on a neighboring farm, a middle aged woman and Vermont homesteader learns about the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), a program by the United States Department of Agriculture to tag and track every livestock animal in the country. Her life changes in an instant as she is brought face-to-face with the biggest threat to food safety, property rights, and rural living anyone could imagine, and she finds herself thrust into the world of grass roots activism.Sharon Zecchinelli’s new book, First They Came for the Cows, a winner in the 2007 National Novel Writing Month, is a fictionalized account of the real fight against NAIS by tens of thousands of ordinary people all over the country. Through the internet, farmers, homesteaders, pet owners, and consumers find each other and learn what it means to be politically involved.

What makes this book different from any other is that it is the first novel ever written about this struggle against the USDA-Corporate alliance that is pushing NAIS, a real David and Goliath story. The inspiration for the book comes from Zecchinelli’s actual experience as Vermont’s leading national anti-NAIS activist. “The heart of the book is right out of real life,” Zecchinelli explains, “with names changed to protect the innocent.”

Zecchinelli, a retired chef, lives in Enosburg Falls, Vermont on a 12 acre homestead with her husband, 19 laying hens, 6 heritage breed turkeys, seasonal meat animals, a horse, and two dogs.

Democrats vote against American workers again!!

Greetings To All!

Is it not amazing, that we have the leader of the U.S. House, the leader of the U.S. Senate, & the President of the United States all pleading their case for passing a stimulus bill the last 2-weeks to help maintain or create 3-4 million jobs. But guess what, they conveniently left out “*E-verify” of the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009”. Can you say HYPOCRITE? E-verify would have prevented organizations & employers from receiving stimulus/taxpayer dollars if they were hiring/employing “illegal aliens” (non-U.S. citizens). How can you possibly go before the American people & tell them that you understand their concerns & frustrations about lost jobs, reduced/eliminated health care benefits, reduced/eliminated retirement accounts & that you are there to help them get back on their feet with a straight face (& not include E-verify in this bill)?????? Truly AMAZING!!!!!

If this irritates the hell out of you like it does me, here is a suggested ACTION PLAN:

1)      Call your U.S. Senators & U.S. Representative offices, ask them to explain how this happened? Ask them what you/they can do to get this blatant outage corrected quickly? Make them & you accountable for “CHANGE”!

2)      Call the offices of Rep. Pelosi, Sen. Reid, & President Obama, to share your frustration & to get their explanation of their hypocrisy! Make them & you accountable for “CHANGE”!

3)      Write a letter to your local paper for their editorial page, to expose the legislative folks (in your area) that voted for “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009”, even though E-verify was not part of it.

4)      Call your local talk show hosts/radio stations & ask them to discuss the costs associated with illegal immigration, the increases in visas/legal immigration-the affects, along with the benefits of e-verify.

Forward this on to everyone that you think may have similar concerns/views & ask for their support.

Together, we can help change the mentality in Washington, DC. From one of political interest in you at election time, but after the election the concern is all about taking care of their various lobbyist groups (short term/self interest only).

Harry Reid       1-202-224-3542

Thanks for any actions on your part!

McCotter: “Sovereign Wealth Funds Diminish Economic Liberty”

This is not protectionism of anything except Americans’ liberty, prosperity, sovereignty, and security.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI-11), House Republican Policy Chairman, recently spoke on the House floor about the threat of sovereign wealth funds  The text of McCotter’s remarks are below:

“Mr. Speaker, I would like today to discuss an issue that is on the horizon that could very well affect the economic freedom of Americans, especially their family’s prosperity and happiness. It is an issue that I would also like to thank the chairman of the Financial Services Committee, Representative Frank, and the ranking member of the subcommittee, Representative Kanjorski, for bringing forward.

“The issue I am talking about is the issue of sovereign wealth funds. Many people will question what is a sovereign wealth fund? The answer is very simple. A sovereign wealth fund is a fund that is controlled by a foreign government that then invests into the private market of the United States.

“Many people, especially those within my own party, disturbingly think sovereign wealth funds are a wonderful way to inject capital into the United States. The reality is these are very dangerous instrumentalities of foreign nations and would allow for the potential interference of these foreign nations in our domestic affairs, and not only within our economic sphere.

“One of the reasons I joined the Republican Party was because I oppose socialism, communism; and I wanted to advance the cause of liberty. A sovereign wealth fund denies all of those. Again, a sovereign wealth fund is controlled by a government. Those who recall economics can understand that when a government buys an asset from the private sector, when the government owns it, the product or service has been “nationalized.” This is the root of socialism. Government buys something in the private sector, socialism gets bigger, free markets and free enterprise and free people get diminished. This is the root problem of a sovereign wealth fund. It will diminish the economic liberty of individuals in the face of governments that are trying to control free enterprise.

“We should not have this occurring in the United States of America, the bastion of free enterprise conducted by free people.

“The second problem I have with sovereign wealth funds grows from the first: a foreign country controls this fund. This is not protectionism of anything except Americans’ liberty, prosperity, sovereignty, and security.

“The Communist Chinese have one of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world. As they continue to tell us, although few people seem to understand that they are serious, they remain communists. The communist sovereign wealth fund from China comes in and buys private assets in the United States. Those government assets are now socialized; and, again, your freedom, liberty, prosperity, and security are diminished and there is a huge problem with this in the hands of the Communist Chinese.

“In addition, whereas in the free market private investment funds have to raise capital voluntarily from individuals and then make rational decisions based upon the profit motive, a sovereign government’s wealth fund is allowed to take and spend and invest. They spend and invest that which they take from their people. They have no accountability to these citizens, and they can invest for a political motive.

“These entities of sovereign wealth funds are antithetical to private sector free market investment. And, again, when they are forced to operate on a private sector profit motive, the sovereign wealth fund can operate on a political motive, which may or may not be in the long-term interests of the people of the United States.

“So for two reasons I would like to go on record immediately in my opposition to sovereign wealth funds in any nation’s hands being invested in the United States and socializing our private sector assets. And I would like to also especially emphasize my abject contempt for nations that are opposed to the United States’ continued existence as a bastion of liberty being able to buy up influence within the United States based upon a solely political motive, and that political motive is not in the people’s best interests.

“So to my fellow Republicans I would ask them to remember why they are Republicans, to remember that we have the duty to advance the economic liberty of Americans and to protect and preserve their liberty and prosperity and security, and ask them to reassess these sovereign wealth funds. Because no matter how much money they inject into our economy to socialize private sector assets, the cost we are going to pay to the long-term vitality of our free people is too high a price to tender to the very enemies of our existence.

– These remarks were delivered on Thursday, March 6, 2008 on the floor of the U.S. Capitol.
