upc_v3b_icon                    Repeal the REAL ID Act

https://secure.downsizedc.org/etp/campaigns/30

The REAL ID Act creates a centralized federal database of personal information about all Americans. Decisions about the exact nature and scope of this program will be made by unelected bureaucrats in the Executive Branch. It seems inevitable that biometric information and electronic tracking tags will be included at some point. No one intends a bad use for this system today, but it is inevitable that it will be used in bad ways in the future.

We are promised increased personal security in return for laying this new “foundation stone” for the creation of a future police state. But those who would trade freedom for security deserve neither, and will have neither.

Many good arguments can be made against REAL ID, but they all reduce to one overpowering truth. The more information government has the less it seems to know. The more power government has the less it seems able to accomplish. Big Government doesn’t work. The federal government needs to do less in order to accomplish more. Small government is focused government. We need smaller government, not a massive new federal identification system. Please ask Congress to repeal the REAL ID Act.

Sending a message is easy. You can write as much or as little as you want. And we start with a brief sentence or two for you. We do this so that . . .

  • The most important point of this campaign is not lost on the Congressional office.
  • No one can hijack our system for a purpose inconsistent with Downsizing DC.
  • But you can still personalize the rest of your message — explain why you were motivated to send this message, or what you believe is the most compelling argument in support of your position.

Are these messages read even with so many folks sending a common first line? You bet they are! Congress cannot afford not to pay attention. And many DC Downsizers get responses from their Congressmen. If you receive a letter, feel free to share it with us at comments@DownsizeDC.org.

  • If you’ve used our Educate the Powerful SystemSM before just enter your user email address and password, and hit GO. You’ll be taken to a screen where you can add your own comments to the message to your elected representatives.
  • If you’re using our Educate the Powerful SystemSM for the first time, please fill out the form for new users. This information is used to direct your message to the correct Senators. Please provide your own password. Do not let the system create one for you. Remember your password. It will allow you to use our system easily in the future for other issues.

The REAL ID Act is a bad law passed under false pretenses. It was rejected three separate times by the U.S. Senate, and was only passed because it was added to a larger bill containing disaster relief and funding for Iraq. The Senate didn’t want it, and the American people don’t want it either. But the Republican majority leadership in Congress imposed it on us, and so now we have to fight to get it repealed.

If Republicans Were Smarter, They’d Be Republicans

Barack Obama’s Victory Speech tells you all you need to know about why the Republicans lost.

Barack Obama’s victory speech on Tuesday night is very interesting. At times it sounds more like he’s promoting Ron Paul’s Campaign for Liberty than accepting victory as a Democratic President.

The Republicans did not lose the election because of Sarah Palin.  Nor was it because of an overwhelming turnout.  Nor was it due to the desire of so many Americans to see “Change.”  The Republicans lost because they forgot what it meant to be a Republican.

Ronald Reagan said, “The heart and soul of conservatism is libertariansism.”

Barack Obama said, “The true strength of our nation comes…from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.”

Liberty?  Opportunity? These are not Democratic ideals. They were Republican ideals, until the Republicans  decided to rip the “heart and soul” out of their party to promote a neocon agenda of “security and safety.”  Without their heart and soul, they got their asses handed to them by the asses, er, donkeys.

To rub more salt into the wounds of the Republicans, Obama also said this about the Republican Party:

Let’s remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.  Those are values we all share.

Self-reliance?  Yeah, like using tax money to “help people pay their mortgages” as McCain proposed?  Individual liberty?  Sure, unless you don’t think you should have your 4th Amendment rights violated to use a ticket you purchased from an airline.  National unity?  There has rarely been a time in our nation’s history when we’ve been more divided than leading into the election.

Why?  Because the Bush Doctrine of “you’re with us or against us” didn’t just apply to foreign nations.  It applied to anyone who wished to use their first amendment rights to criticize government policies.  If you didn’t agree with the government, you weren’t a “patriot.”  A “patriot” is one who stands for the ideals the Republicans were founded on and seemed to have forgotten–not someone who turns a blind eye when the government begins to overstep its bounds in order to keep us “safe.”

If the Republicans want to understand why they lost this election, it isn’t hard to figure out.  They forgot who they were. Or as Ron Paul said in a debate in which he was laughed at and booed, “The Republican Party has lost its way.”  They forgot to promote the values, that as Obama said, “we all share.”

If they want to get back into power, they have to be smart enough to be Republicans again.  The beauty of this is that this time, many of the people they will turn to to run for office while espousing these ideals will actually believe in them after they are elected.  It won’t be about winning an election, it will be about Restoring our Republic.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  The Campaign for Liberty couldn’t be better poised to become the major force in the Republican Party than it is right now.  Just as Reagan ran on these ideals after a massive liberal was in office, there will be a new Reagan who emerges.  And the country will be ready for it.  This time around, the Republicans were just too stupid to listen to a man that was screaming it all along.  Instead, they had to hear the words from the Democratic President-elect.

Representative Lamar Smith, Republican representative from Texas, has decided he needs to launch a [Media Fairness Initiative].

Like many Americans, I have become increasingly concerned about unfair reporting by the mainstream news media. The purpose of the Media Fairness Initiative is not to censor or condemn, but to encourage the media to adhere to the highest standards of reporting and provide the American people with the facts, balanced stories and fair coverage of the news.”

At this point, I have to note, this is the same Lamar Smith who sat on the committee for impeachment inquiry, and who, after hearing the legal and substantive charges against Bush and his administration, claimed he could see no impeachable offenses had occurred.  Upon making this statement, I wondered if Mr. Smith had just recently awakened from a prolonged coma, or if, he was just totally unable to grasp the evidence laid before him.  Personally, I think it must have been a coma.

Now it seems, since the radical right was firmly rejected by a majority of Americans, Mr. Smith believes the media should be controlled and made to report fairly, without bias, use balanced reporting, blah, blah, blah….

I can only assume this sudden interest, or recognition of media bias is simply a case of “when we do it, it is noble and just; if you do it, it’s a crime”.

Mr. Smith, and others like him, saw no problem in the last eight years with the unfair, unbalanced, and many times misleading and outright misrepresentation of the [news], and had this to say:

“The Media Fairness Initiative (MFI) will strongly support a free press and not condone any form of censorship. Instead, we will examine the causes of one-sided reporting, develop strategies to combat media bias, promote an open dialogue between members of the media and elected officials, and remind the media of their profound obligation to provide the American people with the facts. We will avoid personal attacks or gratuitous criticism of media representatives.”

One sided reporting like on Faux News??  Personal attacks like those launched using the media by the right wing spin machine?  Ruppert Murdoch and his faux news channel have made a fortune off the Republicans expressly by doing the very things you now find objectionable, and none of you were remotely concerned with any kind of profound obligation to provide the American people with the facts about anything.  What you were concerned with was using the media from all sources to promote your divide and destroy policies and ideologies and as long as you controlled every word we heard, every piece of information whether true or not, and as long as you kept the upper hand, you found no problem with the media.

Representative Smith evidently entered his coma about the same time that Karl Rove, a man who should be in jail for numerous reasons and who is now appearing on Faux news as some kind of commentator, began the high-jacking of not only our government, but also the media.  We endured eight years of pseudo news promoted, financed and provided by the Bush Administration via Rove, and were intentionally lied to, deceived and spoon fed deliberately misleading and false information.  But, it is only now as the public has firmly rejected the neo-con, holier-than-thou, ‘we’re only lying to you for your own good”, he seems to find problems with the media.

Here is what I believe Mr. Smith truly finds problematic:

The neo-cons were unable to sell their devastating ideology to a weary public that has tired of the vitriol, the nastiness and the censoring of the news to benefit this elitist segment of the country only to find out that little or none of what was reported to them bore any resemblance to the truth of the matter.

When you take a look at who personifies the radical right, who their icons are, who promotes their anti-American views and policies you find some of the most repugnant and disgusting people at the forefront.  Coulter, O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity and other TV and radio personalities who make their living, not by telling any kind of truth or reporting any kind of news, but rather, by delivering a twisted up version of what might have happened but most likely didn’t; or by carefully omitting the [facts] and delivering a carefully crafted series of messages meant to deceive the public.

Representative Smith seems totally oblivious to the past eight years not only regarding the illegal activities of the Bush Administration, but also the manipulation of the news by the far right wing.  Give him some time….maybe as he progresses through his recovery from his recent and long term coma, he’ll come to his senses.  We can only hope.

The Implosion of John McCain and the Demise of the Regressive Right

(excerpted from the full article)

“Which, of course, is exactly what we’re talking about.  Only regressives don’t know it.  They think their policies and attitudes are popular in America.  They think George W. Bush’s problem was that he wasn’t regressive enough.

If only he had invaded Iran as well as Iraq!

If only he had deregulated Wall Street even more.

If only he had encouraged more oil consumption and more carbon emissions.

If only he had eliminated abortion rights.

If only he had cut wealthy Americans’ tax liabilities down to zero, shifting those burdens to the middle class.

If only he had done to all of us what he did to Terri Schiavo’s family.

If only he had eliminated all government spending on popular programs.

If only he had privatized Social Security and let Wall Street handle it.  If only he had wasted even more Iraqis and more American GIs.

If only he had let Osama bin Laden roam even freer, even longer.

If only he had quadrupled the national debt, instead of merely doubling it.

If only Exxon/Mobil had made even more than their all-time corporate record-breaking earnings, while the rest of us were unable to buy enough gas to get to work.

If only Bush could have appointed more regressive justices to the federal bench, where they could find that we have no constitutional right to privacy, and who would make sure that corporate and presidential power trump the people’s and the people’s representatives’ at every turn.

If only there could have been more jobs lost on his watch.

If only we could have seen wages fall lower.

If only the country could have had its wealth more polarized so we could better emulate rotten banana republics.

If only we could have been more divided politically.

If only we could have made the world hate us more.

If only more of our cities could have drowned.

If only we could have hurtled toward planetary destruction even faster.

Hah-hah, right?  Guess, what?  It’s only partly a joke.  Most regressives earnestly believe in most of the items on the above wish list, and earnestly believe that they represent majority opinion in America.  Seriously.  I’m.  Not.  Kidding.” (end excerpt)

Do You Solemnly Swear To Ignore the Constitution?

In response to, “Do You Solemnly Swear To Ignore the Constitution?”

by Andrew P. Napolitano,

as posted on LewRockwell.com 11-3-08.

At a time when Americans’ desperately needs to know what is really happening in, and to, America, Mr. Napolitano contributes to the spin of lies and half truths so apparent on Fox News, and now on LRC.

If Mr. Napolitano were just another journalist puppet of the media industry monopolist, he would have the excuse of having to obey or be unemployed. However his years on the bench leave him no excuse for contributing to the myth of the constitution being the law of the land.

If Mr. Napolitano ever decides to learn or admit that America is still a British Colony and the Constitution is really a corporate agreement between the British Crown and the corporation known as “The United States” then I would be pleased to publicly retract this accusation.

As it is now, the International Bankers have a strangle hold on the truth that every American would know if the Bankers had never gained complete control of the education and media industry.
